Highlights / General details
Begin your journey with a visit to the incredible Tule Tree, the widest tree in the world. Also called the "Tree of Life", scientists estimate its age to be from 1,200 to 3,000 years old. It's said that a powerful shaman blessed the tree when he planted it.
Next we will visit the Zapotec village of Teotitlan del Valle to admire beautiful handmade wool weavings. We will continue at the Zapotec archaeological site of Mitla, which translates to “Place of the Dead”. Mitla is famous for its intricate mosaic architecture and ornamentation fitted together without use of mortar. Estimates show that the city may have been inhabited as early as 900 BC. Visit the church, columns, tombs and temples.
Then you'll have time to shop for arts and crafts at the nearby artisans market. Finally, on the way back, we'll visit a mezcal factory to learn about the production of this unique Mexican liquor fermented and distilled from the maguey agave plant.
